Pirlimycin is an important veterinary drug in animal production, especially in treating infections caused by Streptococcus species. For example, it can enhance cure rates when treating chronic mastitis involves the use of pirlimycin hydrochloride and is called extended therapy. Pirlimycin has excellent activity against S. aureus and it penetrates scar tissue quite well. Approximately 50% of the drug is absorbed from the udder into the bloodstream and 50% of that amount is then re-excreted back into the udder. This helps the drug in reaching infected tissues.

According to EU regulations, the Maximum Residue Limit of pirlimycin in bovine milk is 100ug/kg.
